How to prevent pipe system vibration or shock from causing expansion joint displacement

To prevent the displacement of the expansion joint caused by vibration or shock of the pipeline system, a variety of measures can be taken to ensure the stable operation of the expansion joint and pipeline system. Here are some of the main precautions:

    1. Reasonable design and selection

  • Accurate selection: According to the specific conditions of the pipeline system (such as temperature range, pressure, medium, displacement requirements, etc.), select the appropriate expansion joint type and specification. Ensure that the compensation capacity of the expansion joint can meet the needs of the pipeline system.

  • Natural frequency design: When designing, ensure that the natural frequency of the expansion joint is inconsistent with the system frequency to avoid the occurrence of resonance phenomenon. Typically, the natural frequency of the expansion joint should be at least 50% higher than the system frequency or below a certain value.

    2. Stable support and fixation

  • Solid support: The expansion joint should be firmly supported to prevent its displacement due to pipe vibration or impact. The support structure shall have sufficient stiffness to withstand the weight and dynamic loads of the piping system.

  • Reasonable fixation: When installing the expansion joint, it should be ensured that it is fixed in a reasonable way, so as to avoid the pipeline becoming a cantilever beam caused by the fixing point too far, thus increasing the vibration and displacement of the expansion joint.

    3. Vibration reduction and isolation measures

  • Install damping elements pan>: Install damping elements such as dampers, dampers, etc. in the pipeline system to transfer and dissipate local vibration energy and reduce the vibration amplitude of the pipeline system.

  • Using buffers: When system vibrations are caused by pressure pulses, consider installing buffers that convert high-amplitude and low-frequency vibrations into smaller pulses with higher frequencies and lower amplitudes, thereby reducing the impact on the expansion joint.

    4. Controlling flow rate and media

  • Limiting flow rate: When the flow rate of the fluid in the expansion joint exceeds a certain value (such as 75% of the fluid flow rate value), an inner sleeve should be set in the expansion joint to avoid resonance and reduce pressure drop.

  • Optimized media: Ensure that the media in the pipeline system is compatible with the material of the expansion joint to avoid corrosion or damage of the expansion joint caused by the media.

    5. Regular inspection and maintenance

  • Periodic inspection: Perform regular inspections of the piping system and expansion joints to ensure that they are in good condition. Promptly identify and deal with potential vibration sources or displacement issues.

  • Maintenance and maintenance: According to the use of the expansion joint and the manufacturer's recommendation, carry out corresponding maintenance work, such as lubrication, cleaning, replacement of worn parts, etc., to prolong the service life and performance of the expansion joint.

    6. Other Precautions

  • Installation position and direction: Ensure that the expansion joint is installed in the correct position and direction to avoid it from unnecessary vibration or shock.

  • Follow the specification: During the installation and maintenance process, the requirements of relevant standards and specifications shall be strictly observed to ensure the correct operation.

To sum up, to prevent the displacement of the expansion joint caused by vibration or impact of the pipeline system, it is necessary to comprehensively consider and implement corresponding measures from many aspects such as design, selection, support, fixation, vibration reduction, flow rate control, regular inspection and maintenance, etc.
