Precautions for Expansion Joints of Smoke and Air Ducts

Smoke duct expansion joints (also known as smoke duct compensators) are used in electric power, chemical, metallurgy and other industries to absorb displacements of duct systems due to thermal expansion and contraction, vibration, or installation errors, thus protecting ducts and equipment from damage. The following precautions are essential when designing, installing, and using flue duct expansion joints:

Design and selection

  1. Thermal displacement calculation: Accurately calculate the thermal expansion of the smoke and air duct at the working temperature to ensure that the expansion joint has sufficient compensation ability.

  2. Properties of media: Considering the temperature, pressure, corrosiveness and particulate matter content of the conveying medium, select the appropriate expansion joint material and structure.

  3. Type of displacement: Select the appropriate expansion joint type according to the type of displacement (axial, transverse, angular) that may occur in the pipe system.

  4. Pressure capacity: Ensure that the pressure bearing capacity of the expansion joint meets the maximum working pressure of the pipeline system.

  5. Safety measures: Assume Timing takes into account the safety devices of the expansion joint, such as limiting devices, to prevent excessive displacement.

Installation

  1. Protective bellows: During installation, pay special attention to protecting the bellows of the expansion joint to avoid damage such as collisions, scratches and welding splashes.

  2. Fixtures: Do not remove the transport fixtures until they are installed to maintain the shape and position of the expansion joints.

  3. Pipeline adjustment: Adjust the pipe system to fit the expansion joints, rather than compensate for pipe installation deviations by adjusting the expansion joints.

  4. Avoid torsion: Ensure that the expansion joint is not subjected to torsional forces during installation, as bellows are very sensitive to torsional forces.

  5. Special tools: Use appropriate tools for installation and avoid spreaders or lifting devices that act directly on the bellows.

  6. Bolt tightening: Use a wrench to tighten all the bolts connecting the expansion joint to the pipe one by one, ensuring that the connection is firm and free of leakage.

Use and Maintenance

  1. Periodic inspection: Check the condition of the expansion joints regularly, including bellows wear, tightness of the joints, and leakage.

  2. Environmental adaptability: Ensure that the expansion joint is suitable for its working environment, such as using corrosion-resistant materials in environments with corrosive media.

  3. Vibration Control: Consider the vibration situation of the pipe and avoid resonance, especially when the vibration frequency is close to the natural frequency of the expansion joint.

  4. Temperature and pressure monitoring: Continuously monitor the operating temperature and pressure to ensure that the expansion joint operates within a safe range.

  5. Cleaning and maintenance: Clean the surface of the expansion joint regularly to avoid extra stress caused by dust accumulation and particulate matter.

  6. Performance testing: Carry out the necessary performance tests, such as stiffness tests and self-seismic frequency calculations, to ensure the stability and reliability of the expansion joint.

Following the above precautions can ensure the normal operation of the expansion joint of smoke and air duct, prolong its service life, and at the same time ensure the safety and efficiency of the whole duct system.
