Function of spherical compensator

A spherical compensator is a special pipe fitting that is mainly used to absorb angular and lateral displacements in pipe systems, especially in industrial applications with high temperatures and pressures. Here are the main roles of the spherical compensator:

  1. Thermal expansion compensation: The spherical compensator can compensate for thermal expansion or contraction of the pipe due to temperature changes. When the pipe is heated, it will extend along the length; When the pipe cools, it shrinks. The spherical compensator, through its unique spherical structure, allows the pipe to move freely in multiple directions, thereby reducing or eliminating the resulting thermal stress.

  2. Angular displacement absorption: Unlike corrugated compensators, spherical compensators are particularly suitable for absorbing angular displacements, i.e. angular variations at pipe connections. This makes spherical compensators useful in complex pipe layouts that require multi-directional displacement compensation.

  3. Flexibility of device connectivity: In some situations where equipment is connected to the pipeline system, the spherical compensator can act as a movable joint of the pipeline, providing additional degrees of rotation and swing freedom, reducing the transmission of vibration from the equipment to the pipeline system, while also absorbing displacement caused by thermal expansion of the equipment.

  4. Reduce stress concentration: The use of spherical compensators can significantly reduce the stress concentration phenomenon in the pipeline and avoid pipeline rupture or leakage caused by excessive stress.

  5. Adapt to uneven foundation settlement: In buildings or infrastructure, spherical compensators can help the pipeline system adapt to uneven settlement of the foundation or displacement caused by earthquakes, protecting the pipeline from damage.

  6. Easy to install and maintain: Spherical compensators usually have a compact structure, occupy less space, and have small fluid resistance, so they are easy to install and relatively easy to maintain later.

However, spherical compensators also have their limitations, such as limited lateral displacement absorption capacity, and the risk of leakage that may exist in some cases. Therefore, when selecting and designing a piping system, it is necessary to determine whether to use spherical compensators and how to properly install and use them according to the specific application conditions and needs.
