How to Choose the Right Bellows Material?

Choosing the right bellows material is a critical step in ensuring the performance and longevity of metal expansion joints. A variety of factors should be considered when selecting, including but not limited to working environment, medium characteristics, temperature range, pressure conditions, etc. The following are the main considerations when choosing corrugated pipe materials:

        1. Properties of media

  • Chemical corrosivity: If corrosive media (such as acid, alkali, salt solution) are transported in the pipeline, materials with good corrosion resistance should be selected, such as stainless steel (304, 316L, etc.), nickel-based alloy or titanium alloy.

  • abrasiveness: For media containing solid particles or other strong abrasiveness, materials with good abrasion resistance should be selected.

        2. Operating temperature

  • High temperature environment: For bellows working under high temperature conditions, materials with excellent high temperature strength and oxidation resistance should be selected, such as Inconel 625, Incoloy 800H, etc.

  • Low temperature environment: For corrugated pipes used at low temperatures, materials with good low temperature toughness, such as austenitic stainless steel (such as 304L, 316L), need to be selected.

        3. Working pressure

  • Under high pressure environment, the selection of corrugated pipe material should pay attention to its mechanical strength and pressure resistance. Generally, high-strength stainless steel or duplex stainless steel (such as 2205) is chosen for its higher yield strength and good ductility.

        4. Fatigue life

  • Bellows will undergo multiple cyclic deformation during use, so the material should be selected considering its fatigue strength. Certain special alloys, such as Inconel 718, have excellent fatigue resistance and are suitable for use in high cycle number application scenarios.

        5. Economy and availability

  • Considering cost-effectiveness, materials with high cost performance should be selected on the premise of meeting technical requirements. At the same time, it is necessary to consider the market supply of materials and the difficulty of processing.

        6. Other special requirements

  • Fire resistance: In some occasions, there may be fire protection requirements for corrugated pipes, and specific refractory alloys can be selected at this time.

  • Hygiene standards: For food, medicine and other industries, bellows materials must meet the corresponding hygienic standards to avoid contaminating products.

Common corrugated pipe materials and their applicable scenarios:

  • 304/304L stainless steel: Widely used in ordinary industrial environment, suitable for most non-corrosive media.

  • 316/316L stainless steel: Has better corrosion resistance and is suitable for a wider range of media types, especially in environments containing chloride ions.

  • Inconel 625: Suitable for extreme high temperatures and corrosive environments, commonly used in chemical and petroleum industries.

  • Titanium and titanium alloys: Suitable for highly corrosive media and seawater environments, it is favored for its excellent corrosion resistance.
