Technical requirements for desulfurization expansion joints

Desulfurization expansion joints (also known as desulfurization compensators) are expansion joints specifically designed for use in desulfurization systems of thermal power plants, mainly used to absorb displacements of pipeline systems due to thermal expansion and contraction, mechanical vibrations or installation errors, as well as to reduce noise and vibration. Here are some key technical and design requirements for desulfurization expansion joints:

  1. Material selection

  • Corrugated pipes and connectors should be made of corrosion and high temperature resistant materials such as stainless steel.

  • Non-metallic parts such as sealing materials and thermal insulation layers usually adopt high temperature resistant composite materials such as silicone rubber, glass fiber, thermal insulation cotton, etc.

  • Displacement capacity

    • Able to absorb axial, lateral and angular displacements.

    • The displacement amount should be calculated and determined according to the actual working conditions to ensure sufficient compensation amount.

  • Pressure rating

    • Operating pressures typically range from low to medium pressure, depending on the pressure rating of the piping system.

    • Must be able to withstand the maximum pressure of the system design.

  • Temperature adaptability

    • Ability to operate normally within the operating temperature range of the desulfurization system, which typically includes both high and low temperature conditions.

    • Materials and design should take into account changes caused by temperature differences.

  • Corrosion resistance

    • Due to the corrosive media in the desulfurization system, the expansion joint should have good corrosion resistance.

    • Especially when dealing with SO2 and other corrosive gases.

  • Sealability

    • Designed to be leak-free, ensuring that displacement can be absorbed under all operating and accident conditions without causing leakage.

  • Installation and maintenance

    • It is easy to install, easy to maintain, and can be disassembled and replaced quickly.

    • The installation location and space constraints of the expansion joint need to be taken into account.

  • Earthquake resistance and noise reduction

    • It can absorb the vibration of the pipe and reduce the system noise.

    • The effects of seismic loads are considered in design.

  • Test and Validation

    • All expansion joints should undergo rigorous pressure and displacement testing before they leave the factory to ensure that they meet the design requirements.

    • Relevant test reports and quality certification documents shall be provided.

  • Customized design

    • Depending on the specific application requirements, expansion joints may require customized design, including the choice of size, shape, and material.

  • Safety margin

    • Design with certain safety margins in mind, such as additional margin for pressure and temperature.

  • Interface standards

    • Interface flanges or other connectors shall comply with international or national interface standards to facilitate compatibility with other pipe assemblies.

    These technical requirements are formulated based on the long-term reliable operation of desulfurization expansion joints in harsh environments.
