Service life of metal hoses in petrochemical industry

The lifespan of metal hoses used in the petrochemical industry mainly depends on several key factors, including:

  1. Media Properties: The temperature, pressure, corrosiveness of the transmission medium in the hose, and whether it contains solid particles, etc. will affect its life.

  2. Work environment: Extreme environmental conditions such as high temperatures, high pressures, corrosive gases or liquids, and vibration in the petrochemical industry have a significant impact on the durability of hoses.

  3. Materials and construction: The quality and design of the material of a metal hose (e.g. stainless steel, nickel alloy, etc.) and its construction (bellows, braided layers, etc.) also determine its durability.

  4. Installation and maintenance: Correct installation method and regular inspection and maintenance can prolong the service life of metal hoses.

  5. Operation Conditions: Overload operation, such as exceeding the design pressure or temperature range, can shorten the service life of the hose.

  6. External factors: such as physical damage, accidental impact, improper storage or exposure to adverse weather conditions may also shorten their life.

Based on previously gathered information, the lifespan of metal hoses can range from a few years to decades, as follows:

  • The service life of oil tank metal hoses is generally 3-5 years.

  • The service life of water supply metal hose is about 8 years, and some information mentions that it can reach 10 years.

  • Metal hoses for gas can have a life cycle of up to 10 years, which is much longer than traditional rubber hoses (about 18 months replacement cycle).

  • Indoor Natural Gas Metal Hose can last up to 20 years in some cases, such as using high-quality materials.

For metal hoses in the petrochemical industry, due to their harsher working environment, which may require more frequent inspections and maintenance, the actual service life may skew towards the lower end of the above range, which is about 3-5 years. However, if the hose is properly designed, has quality materials, and is properly maintained, its service life can be significantly extended.

In order to ensure the safe and effective operation of metal hoses in the petrochemical industry, the following points should be followed:

  • Check periodically: Check the hose for signs of cracks, leaks, corrosion, or wear.

  • Stress testing: Pressure tests are performed periodically to ensure the integrity of the hose.

  • Cleaning and anti-corrosion: Keep hoses clean and take appropriate measures to prevent corrosion.

  • Replacement strategy: Establish a replacement strategy based on inspection results and manufacturer recommendations.

In the petrochemical industry, safety is of paramount importance, so even if metal hoses still appear intact, they should be replaced according to the manufacturer's recommendations or based on the results of regular inspections to avoid potential risk of failure.
